Sportsman Authority is for everyone who hunts, fishes, and lives the outdoor life, regardless of gender, age, or experience. We use "sportsman" the way the field always has: as a badge for anyone who respects the season, the gear, and the water. Research-backed, Wisconsin-rooted, and built to be genuinely useful.
Who runs this site
I'm Joel Kelly. I grew up in Wisconsin and I still spend my seasons here, at a family cabin on Deer Lake near Tomahawk, with a Polaris XPEDITION that earns its keep hauling gear through the Northwoods. I'll be straight with you: I'm not a lifelong hardwater angler. That is exactly why nothing on this site rests on my say-so. Every conditions claim is sourced to state DNR guidance and public data, every gear verdict shows its methodology, and the voices quoted are the people with decades on the ice. Sportsman Authority is the eighth site in The Authority Suite, a network of specialist publications I build and operate, each held to the same standard: show the source, explain the tradeoff, date the guidance, and disclose the commercial relationships.
What we cover
Fishing, with ice fishing as the founding obsession. Hunting accessories: optics, trail cameras, stands, blinds, calls, decoys, archery. UTV and powersports accessories. Heated gear and cold weather apparel. Working dog gear, and game processing. We cover women's-specific fits and sizing as standard in every gear roundup, not as an afterthought.
What we will not do
We do not sell or link firearms or ammunition. We will never tell you ice is safe: our conditions references are educational, sourced to state DNR guidance, and always secondary to drilling test holes yourself. And we do not publish recommendations we cannot explain.
How the site makes money
Some product links are affiliate links routed through our own redirect so we can see what readers find useful. If you buy through one, the retailer may pay us a commission at no cost to you. Details are on the disclosure page. Recommendations are never for sale.
